30th Anniversary Logo

Join us this summer in celebrating 30 years of Virginia Railway Express!

In preparation, we’re happy to introduce our freshly redesigned, yet inherently familiar “anniversary” logo, which is quite literally a hybrid of old and new.

Taking vintage cues from the historical 1929 Railway Express Agency’s logo, the original 1991 Virginia Railway Express service mark retained REA’s red diamond shape with the arched lettering adding only concentric ovals to the middle while adjusting the red, white and green Christmas colors of REA to the cardinal, white and blue colors of the flag of the Virginia Commonwealth.

A secondary logo - a modern, bare-bones design of red diamond, white oval, with VRE-centered lettering - made its first appearance in 2001, gracing the nose of our on-loan Sounder equipment, appearing in our November 2004 Rider’s guide, and replacing our original logo for VRE’s first website redesign in 2005. This logo cemented “VRE” (to the acronym-minded DC commuter-crowd) as the rail service’s official nickname, thus supplanting “the Express” - the hoped upon sobriquet which never really caught on. Easy to read and easy to recognize, the modern logo would be the go-to design in 2009 for all pathfinder signs located along the interstate, thus simplifying the process of locating one of our train stations.

And now, here with 30 years upon us, we once again revisit our brand, taking the easily read VRE-centered logo and combining it with the vintage concentric ovals and the arched lettering of the original, thus combining two into one.

When you see it, new, old or in between, we simply want to remind you that - you’ve got a train to catch!
